John: Too May Spoilers

Speaking to Radio Times magazine, John Yorke has admitted thatEastEnders probably reveal too many episode ‘spoilers’ ahead of transmission.
Yorke, who is controller of BBC Drama Production and New Talent, went on to say, ‘Keeping secret the identity of Archie’s killer until the live episode showed how potent a surprise can be. Since then, we’ve been looking at other ways to do it.’

The identity of Archie Mitchell’s murderer drew in over 16 million viewers when Stacey Slater confessed to the crime during theEastEnders Live episode on the 19th of February this year. Up until then it had been a closely guarded secret, known only to seven members of the EastEnders crew, including Yorke himself.

The soap’s second-best-kept secret, ‘Who Shot Phil Mitchell?’ was revealed to 20 million viewers on the 5th of April 2001 and even resulted in the third largest power surge on record, according to the National Grid. At the time, the identity of the would-be murderer was known by only a handful of cast and crew.
